Schrödinger’s Cat Explainer
In his time, Erwin Schrödinger probably didn’t think his cat in the box thought experiment, meant to ridicule quantum physics, would be widely used today to teach quantum theory. In light of this ironic tradition, I made a motion graphics video to explain Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment.
This video is the result of a school project which had the goal of explaining a concept or process in about 15 seconds. I chose the Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment because I’m interested in explaining scientific principles and creating educational art. It was a challenge, but what can I say, curiosity may have killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back!
The Process
My process began with research (thank you science degree), and writing a script that would fit a 15 second video. I then prepared a rough storyboard to go with the script, which I presented to my teacher for feedback. Next, I prepared assets that would reflect the look and feel I wanted for the video.
I then set out to work preparing all of my files for export to Adobe After Effects, including a recording of myself reading my script out loud. The final step, and the longest one, was to animate. This part of the process was greatly helped by using expressions (bits of coding) to avoid manually animating everything.
